Great Price Find at Target

I was doing my normal clearance shopping at Target today and found a whole bunch of gum packs on clearance on an end cap in the grocery section. I had 4 of the B1G1 coupons from the 4/5 Smart Source insert for Extra gum. It was marked down to $.52 each so I was able to get 8 packs for $2.25 including tax. Not my most exciting deal but a great find!

Is it a good deal??

This week there are several sales on Toilet Paper and Paper Towels at CVS and Walgreens.  I was curious about how good a deal these sales were so I did a little comparison shopping.  The sales come out just about the same price as buying at Sam's Club but if you don't have a membership there or aren't planning on going soon then you'll want to take advantage of these sales.  Following are a sample of the price comparisons that I found.

Price comparisons

**Please remember these are prices that I have seen while shopping and that prices in your area may be slightly different.  This is just a comparison for you to get an idea on if an advertised deal is a good deal or not.**

Quilted Northern Toilet Paper

Target  $.58/roll  (12 dbl rolls = 6.99)

Walgreens  $.79/roll (12 dbl rolls = 9.49)

HEB  $.58/roll  (12 dbl rolls = $6.97)

Sam’s  $.49/roll  (36 dbl rolls = 17.48)

**This week Walgreens has a sale for $.49/roll (12 dbl rolls = $5.99)

Charmin Ultra Soft Toilet Paper

Walgreens $.82/roll (12 big = 9.79)

CVS $.81/roll (16 big = 12.99)

HEB $.62/roll (16 big = $9.99)

Sams $.50/roll (36 big = 17.88)

**This week CVS has a sale for $.50/roll after ECBs

Bounty Paper Towels

Sams has a pack that is 12 Mega roll which equals 20 regular for 17.88 = .89/regular roll

**CVS has and 8 pack regular roll on sale for 6.99 = .89/regular roll

Walgreens Basics

Much like CVS and their Extra Care Bucks, Walgreens has Register Rewards.  It goes by the same principal that if you buy the required products a coupon will print out and you can use it like cash on your next purchase.  It is a little trickier to use the Register Rewards so here are a few tricks that I have learned:

1) You cannot receive register rewards for 2 companies on the same transaction.  For example, if a register reward was offered for Kellogg's cereal and Kellogg's granola bars and you bought both you would only receive one of the register rewards.

2) You cannot redeem the register rewards from one company and earn new ones from the same company.  So if you bought the Kellogg's cereal and got your register reward and then returned later and bought more Kellogg's cereal the next register reward would not print.  (however, if you paid with a register reward from another company you would receive the Kellogg's register reward).  This can be tricky at times as some products may be made by the same company and be sold under different brand names.

3) The register rewards are technically entered as a manufacturer's coupon when you use them.  Since only one coupon is allowed per item purchased you will need to buy a small item if you are using coupons on everything you are buying and paying with a register reward.  For example, if you are buying 4 items and have 4 coupons and 2 register rewards you would need to buy 2 small items (pack of gum, tissue paper, etc.) to make the number of items purchased match the number of coupons/register rewards you are using.

4) Walgreen's allows you to use store coupons along with a manufacturer's coupon.  So if there is a coupon in the add for an item and you have a manufacturer's coupon also you may use both and increase your savings.  (The store coupons do not count in the total coupon count that was discussed above in point #3)

While that may all be confusing it will help you to maximize your benefits with their register reward program.

Coupon Organization

Does the thought of constantly cutting out coupons drive you crazy?  There is a way that is easier!  Each week I get the inserts from the paper and take a sharpie marker and write the date on the front.  Then I have an filing folder where I place these.  I only cut out the coupons later that I am going to need for that week.  This is a huge time saver and keeps me from having to cut and file coupons all day!

In the coming days I will have posts that include pictures and show you what methods that I use and give you an idea of how easy it can be.

Basic things about CVS shopping

I don’t know about where you live but there are CVS stores all over the place around here.  Up until a few weeks ago I visited my CVS store only to fill prescriptions as needed.  I was a member of their rewards program (called Extra Care Plan) but only used it when I filled a prescription.  Recently I found a great website (Frugal Coupon Living) that opened my eyes to the great savings that I was missing out on.  Since then I have been a regular visitor of my local CVS store and I have saved a lot of money on items that I was previously buying at full price.  Here are some easy steps that you can take to start saving right away.

1) Sign up for the Extra Care Plan.  It’s super easy to do and absolutely free.  Then make sure you always have your card with you when you shop because many of the sale prices are only good with your Extra Care card.  (the cashier can also look your account up by your phone number in case you forget to take your card along).  Their program is very easy to use and they are always very clear in the ad if there is a limit to the number of items you can purchase.

2) Learn how to not only take advantage of the sales but also to use their Extra Care Bucks to your advantage.  Each week in the sales ad there will be a select number of products that when you purchase you can receive Extra Care Bucks to use on your next purchase.  When you combine sales with coupons you can often end up getting many products for FREE or with very little out of pocket.  The Extra Care Bucks print out at the bottom of your receipt and work like cash on your next visit.  Often coupons will print out as well ( I often receive a $4 off a $20 purchase coupon on my receipt- which can be combined with the ECBs to maximize savings.  (CVS also has a monthly sales ad that has a lot of items that you can earn ECBs with.)

3) In addition to earning ECBs on items on sale you also receive a dollar ECB with every 2 prescriptions that you fill.  Also you receive 2% back on your quarterly spending 4 times a year.

4) Start enjoying the savings!  Each week I will post a compilation of sale items and coupons that match them to help you choose your purchases.  If there are several things that I want to purchase I will often visit a couple of times each week so that I am getting ECBs back each time and using them on the next visit so that I can maximize my savings.  If time doesn’t allow for this just buy what you would benefit from and then take the ECBs back the next week and use towards that weeks savings.

*ECBs cannot be used for alcohol, tobacco, prescriptions, and some other similar purchases.

Recent Savings
Combining Sales and Coupons

I bought these items on a recent visit to Wal-Mart.  The total was over $32 and I ended up paying $4.33
out of pocket!!

I have tried cutting coupons in the past and would spend so much time cutting and sorting only to go to the grocery store and save a few dollars at a time.  While every little bit helps, this just didn't seem to be worth all the effort.  I knew that there had to be a way to save more but I quickly got discouraged and just gave up.  Now I am learning to find items that are on sale and combine them with coupons for the maximum savings.  I have also learned some easy organization tips that have made the process easier.

In the coming days I will begin to share some of the simple strategies that I have learned and you can begin to see savings add up.

These were my purchases last week at CVS and Walgreens.  These items totaled $164.84 and I paid
$31.77
out of pocket!
